Caerleon
We spend the morning exploring Caerleon, one of Europe's most fascinating and revealing Roman sites. To the Romans the town was known as Isca. Here they created not just a military camp but also an entire township, complete with amphitheatre and bathhouse. The variety of remains on view in Caerleon is unparalleled within the British Isles, providing visitors with a vivid picture of life in Roman Britain almost 2,000 years ago.
Raglan Castle
After lunch we visit Raglan Castle, set amongst green rolling border country. Once a sumptuous palace with formal state apartments and Great Tower, it was more a statement of wealth and social aspiration than an intimidating military presence.
It acquitted itself well however when forced into active service, enduring in 1646 one of the longest sieges in the Civil War, before falling to Cromwell's forces and suffering at the hands of his demolition team. Even in ruin however, noble Raglan remains the finest late-medieval fortress-palace in the British Isles.
Tredegar House
We continue to Tredegar House, for an escorted tour through the stunning staterooms, adorned with fine paintings, carvings and elaborate ceilings, illustrating the opulence of William Morgan, the builder of the house. The story of the Morgan family will unfold, with many famous and eccentric characters, including Sir Henry Morgan, the notorious pirate, and Godfrey, the second Lord Tredegar who survived the Charge of the Light Brigade.
There is free time to explore the gardens and stroll around the lake before returning to your hotel.
